Possums

Description

Possums have a light gray color fur and adults are usually around 33 inches in length including a 12 inch tail. About 4-6 weeks after birth of feeding off of the mothers mammary glads, the babies will remain with their mother for another month before going out alone. Possums seek shelter in hollow logs, rock crevices, tree cavities or old squirrel leaf nests. They prefer habitats near swamps, streams or wooded areas because food is more likely to be plentiful there. Their traveling may be limited to a few hundred yards from their den. Possums are omnivours that will eat whatever is available, such as fish, insects, mushrooms, berries, fruit, cultivated vegetables, eggs and human garbage.

Preventative measures

Possums like to get into chicken coops, pens and similar structures. They shouldn't be able to get in as easily if all the openings are blocked up. They are good climbers, but you can stretch an electric fence over mesh wire so they cant climb over. It also helps to keep your trash cans tightly secured and not leave garbage around your yard.
