Skunks usually weigh 6-10 pounds, about the size of a cat. They have pointed snouts and a triangular head with a white stripe on the nose and forehead. Most of the time skunks have a black body with white stripes on their back. They are not strong climbers dues to their short legs, but they have strong feet that can dig holes. Skunks are able to spray a stream of musk for serveral meters. They are known to make dens under porches, sheds, and buildings. Skunks are omnivores and mostly eat insects, invertebrates (animals lacking a backbone), and fruit.
If you run into a skunk speak softly and move away from it so it has room to leave. Securing your garbage is a good way to prevent skunks on your property. Feeding your pets outdoors can also attract skunks to your home, feeding your pets indoors will lessen the chances of a skunk wondering onto your property. You should close up any crawl spaces under porches or sheds. They may also wonder into an open garage at night. Keeping bird feeder areas clean will help prevent attracting skunks.
