Snakes in Massachusetts live in agricultural areas, forests and swampy woodlands. There are 14 types of snakes in Massachusetts, but only 2 of them are venomous (Timber Rattlesnake) and (Copperhead). The different types of snakes will vary in length. Snakes are carnivores, their diets vary with size and species and can include insects, worms, amphibians, fish, small mammals, and sometimes birds.
Snakes like to eat small rodents. If you do things like clean up pet food outdoors, sweep under bird feeders, and place other food sources in a sealed container to keep the rodent population down snakes will have less food near your home. Removing rocks that snakes like to sun themselves on or removing bushes that rodents like to live in can help mitigate the snake population near your home. If you mow your grass snakes are more likely to avoid the short-cut grass because they can be found by predators easier.
